I am a French citizen. In France education including higher education and University is free. When I went to University, I paid roughly £375.00 tuition fee per year. For those whose parents couldn’t afford it, the governement would subsidise them in the form of a bursary. This also applies to student accommodation.
I am outraged to the point of anger that in the UK, Universities charge up to £9,000.00 per year for a student to have the right to be educated there. Isn’t education a universal right? Shouldn’t it be available to everybody? Regardless of gender, ethnicity or in that case financial background? Basically, that level of fees, means that those who cannot pay them are automatically excluded and this may include some brilliant minds that could achieve great things would they be able to reach and develop their potential in a university setting. It also means that on graduation, a student leaves with a huge amount of debt even before starting an active life. THIS IS WRONG!!!
I truly believe that Harvard University which is the World’s best university has cracked the tuition fee problem. British Education Minister should study more carefully what they have done and apply it to the UK. How do they do it? You have an admission process to go through. Once accepted, your parents have to fill in a form in which they mention all their assets and liabilities that they have. Based on this information, the university works out how much you have to pay for that year. THIS IS RIGHT, because it means that people that get an education at Harvard can do so based on academics rather than social background, but it also means that the worst off pay less or nothing at all while the better off pay the full amount. Haven’t you heard the word FAIRNESS regularly during this general election campaign? Politicians take note, THIS IS FAIRNESS AT ITS BEST.
